WLP Opposes HB934: Threatens to Disenfranchise Thoudands of Pennsylvania VotersThe Women’s Law Project strongly opposes HB934 which is currently before the PA House State Government Committee. HB934 would require all voters to present photo identification issued by either the United States or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania before casting their ballot. Additionally, the photo identification would be required to have an expiration date and the name would need to conform to the registration listed in the voting rolls. Photo identification requirements disproportionately impact the elderly, the poor, the disabled, and student voters who are less likely to have an acceptable photo identification card. This legislation has the potential to discourage voters from participating in elections because it is bound to create longer lines at the polling locations. Additionally, legislators should not be looking for ways to increase government spending at a time when the Governor has already proposed deep cuts to education and services to the poor. Furthermore, the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania also oppose Pennsylvania lawmakers should not be engaged in the immoral act of creating barriers to voting and robbing citizens of their most important civic responsibility – voting. ACTIONCall your Pennsylvania Representative in the House today and ask them to protect our right to vote and oppose HB934!
