Lesbian and Gay Parenting

The Women's Law Project strives to provide children of gay and lesbian parents with the same rights as children of heterosexual parents. Toward this end, our efforts include:

Representing amicus curiae in support of adoption and custody rights of lesbian parents;

Convening the Pennsylvania Council on Second-Parent Adoption, which monitors adoption procedures involving lesbian and gay families.

WLP Joins Advocates in Opposing Constitutional Amendment Banning Same-Sex Marriage

On January 24th, the Women's Law Project joined with other members of the Value All Families Coalition to oppose the constitutional amendment on marriage which was introduced on the same day by State Representative Scott Boyd. Same-sex couples are already denied the right to marry in Pennsylvania. This amendment is unnecessary, divisive, and politically motivated.

The proposed amendment could take away existing legal protection, under local laws, for committed long-term couples and their children, such as hospital visitation rights, inheritance rights, pension benefits and health insurance coverage among others. See copies of press statements. Also learn more about how this hurts Pennsylvania's families.
