President Obama announced on Saturday his selection of Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Governor Sebelius has been an ally of President Obama ever since endorsing him early in the campaign. She is Obama’s second choice for this position after Senator Tom Daschle, who withdrew his nomination because of controversy surrounding his failure to pay taxes. We previously blogged about Daschle’s nomination here.
Obama’s selection of Governor Sebelius sends a powerful message regarding Obama’s stance on reproductive choice in the United States. Sebelius, a Catholic, has repeatedly vetoed abortion restrictions in her home state of Kansas. Her nomination has already met with fierce opposition, and is being attacked by anti-abortion groups. We are heartened by her nomination and look forward to her positive presence in the Obama administration. To read more about her nomination, check out this New York Times article.
