March is Women’s History Month in the United States. The theme for this year is “Our History is Our Strength.”

This theme pays tribute to the millions of women who have taken action to help create a better world for the times in which they lived, as well as for future generations.

The emphasis is on the unique history of women, and the perseverance many women had to shape their history.  This perseverance has instilled strength in today’s women, and it is important to recognize it.
Additionally, Gerda Lerner is being honored for her groundbreaking and extensive work in the field of women’s history, including teaching the first women’s history course. The National Women’s History Project is also encouraging individuals to honor women from local communities and institutions who have embodied the strength gained from their own history.

In 2011, instead of the National Women’s History Project recognizing National Honorees, we are encouraging communities and institutions to honor women from their communities, states, and organizations whose lives and work have served to inspire the strength that comes from knowing the stories of these determined women.

Happy Women’s History Month!
