Did you hear?

Netroots Nation, the country’s biggest annual progressive conference for organizers, grassroots activists and independent media makers, is coming to Philadelphia this summer, July 11 – 13.

The panels, trainings, and screenings at Netroots should reflect and help define our shared progressive agenda and values. Since it will be in our backyard this year, it’s also an opportunity for local organizations and advocates to talk about the issues we care about in order to educate, inspire, and shape priorities and projects across the country.

Panel #1: Amid the Opioid Epidemic, Pregnant People are Targeted for Discrimination, Criminalization & Punishment

What happens when escalated political attacks on reproductive rights collide with the opioid epidemic? With radical anti-choice politicians in key positions governing a state where overdose deaths easily outpace the national average, Pennsylvania is a testing ground for this dark experiment. Here, pregnant people are not only actively excluded from evidence-based approaches to the opioid crisis but specifically targeted with punishment, criminalization, and incarceration. We’ll discuss the issue and strategies to protect pregnant people from “pro-life” efforts to punish them.

Moderator: WLP Attorney Amal Bass

Panelists:  David S. Cohen, professor at the Drexel University Kline School of Law and WLP Board member; Lexi White, Senior Policy Manager at New Voices for Reproductive Justice, Rosemarie Halt, Senior Director of Policy at Maternity Care Coalition, and Pennsylvania Rep. Morgan Cephas, chair of the Women and Girls of Color Subcommittee of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus.

Panel #2: Addressing Sexual Harassment & Intersecting Discrimination in Philadelphia Restaurants: A Case Study

What can we learn from examining sexual harassment in a celebrated restaurant scene thriving in a poverty-stricken city? With low wages, majority female workers, rampant wage theft, and a large immigrant workforce, it’s little wonder most EEOC sexual harassment complaints come from restaurants. On this panel, we’ll discuss the challenges of addressing sexual harassment in restaurants and highlight local innovative advocacy efforts including mobilizing workers, promoting a multi-faceted policy agenda including One Fair Wage, and a new coalition of anti-rape advocates, city officials, and public interest lawyers working directly with restaurant owners and workers.

Moderator: WLP Managing Attorney Terry Fromson

Panelists: Nadia Hewka, staff attorney at Community Legal Services and co-founder of Coalition for Restaurant Safety and Health; Samuel Jones; Director of the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Pennsylvania; Jenn Oliver, advocate for workplace equality.
