Happy Pride Month!
Earlier this year, we saw several historic votes in the Pennsylvania House to protect LGBTQ equality, including legislation to update Pennsylvania law to align with existing federal constitutional protections.
But those protections are not yet fully codified into state law. That means Pride isn’t just a celebration—it’s a call to action.
The first bill we’re highlighting this month is Marriage Equality (HB 1800, Rep. Kenyatta):
- HB 1800 would update Pennsylvania law to align with current marriage equality protections.
- In May 2014, a federal judge ruled that Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. In June 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ended same-sex marriage bans nationwide.
- Codifying marriage equality in Pennsylvania law would help ensure that families and children of LGBTQ+ parents are protected if federal marriage equality protections are rolled back.
- Most Pennsylvanians, like most Americans, support enshrining marriage equality into state law.
- This bill passed the House with bipartisan support, 127–72.
👉 What needs to happen next: A vote in the PA Senate State Government Committee. HB 1800 has been sitting in the Pennsylvania Senate State Government Committee since April 1.
