We are so grateful to essential workers.

They’ve helped so many of us through this harrowing time–caring for children, ringing and bringing groceries, and risking their lives to tend to patients in hospitals and nursing homes.

If these workers are exposed to the virus or have a sick child or parent at home, they should be able to stay home and take care of themselves or their family without losing a paycheck.

Unfortunately, so many essential workers were left out of federal protections. But we can help fix that by taking local action.

Providing emergency public health leave is the right thing to do for workers, and also for public safety’s sake. We know people go to work when sick when they can’t afford to miss a day’s pay, and with COVID-19, that situation can easily lead to community spread.

Public Health Emergency Leave for Philadelphia

As a proud member of The Coalition to Respect Every Worker (CREW), WLP is asking you to contact Philadelphia City Councilmembers to urge them to pass Councilmember Brooks’ Public Health Emergency Leave Bill (No. 200303).

CREW includes Community Legal Services, Jobs With Justice, Make the Road PA, National Domestic Workers Alliance, One PA, Pathways PA, Phila Coalition of Labor Union Women, Philly Workers for Dignity, Philly Unite Here, SEIU Healthcare PA, ROC PA, and Women’s Law Project.

We support Councilmember Brooks’ bill because it will give paid leave to healthcare workers, gig workers, and those left out of federal protections.

More information about the bill is here.

The Vote is Sept. 10: What You Need to Do

Essential workers have cared for us, now it’s our turn to care for them.

We need as many people as possible to contact Philadelphia City Council and urge passage of Councilmember Brooks’ Public Health Emergency Leave Bill (No. 200303).

To get this done, people need to be calling, emailing, and posting every day between now and the vote.

  • Contact Philadelphia City Council through email, phone calls, and social media (see contact info below)
  • Urge them to pass Councilmember Brooks’ Public Health Emergency Leave Bill (No. 200303)
  • Share this information with a friend and urge them to also take action
